Establishment Process

Official decision on its establihsmnet at the 2nd IPBES Meeting held in Panama in April 2012 (host: UNEP, cooperating organizations: UNESCO, FAO, UNDP)

Purpose of Establishment

Conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of its components, long-term human welfare, and reinforcement of the science-policy interface concerning biodiversity and ecological services for sustainable development

Main Functions

  • (Assessment) Assessment of biodiversity and ecological services
  • (Knowledge Generation) Selection of key scientific information and promotion of new knowledge creation
  • (Policy Support) Selection of related methodologies and measures, etc. and support policy development and implementation
  • (Capacity Reinforcement) Identification of priority tasks for capacity reinforcement in the fields concerned and support for the related activities

IPBES Objectives and Deliverables (2014-2018 Work Program)

Step 1. Enhance the enabling environment for the knowledge-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services

  • Priority capacity building needs matched with resources
  • Improvement of execution capacity for the IPBES Work Program
  • Creation of a cooperation system with indigenous and local knowledge systems
  • Creation of a knowledge and data/resource system for policy support

Step 2. Strengthen the knowledge-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services on regional and sub-regional levels

  • Guidelines on generating and compiling the results of biodiversity and ecological service assessments
  • Assessment of regional biodiversity and ecological services
  • Assessment of global biodiversity and ecological services

Step 3. Strengthen the knowledge-policy interface with regards to thematic and methodological issuesspan

  • (a) Fast track assessment on pollination and food security
  • Assessment under three themes (degradation and restoration of land, invasive and introduced species, sustainable use of biodiversity)
  • Policy support tools and methodologies in relation to scenario analysis and modeling of biodiversity and ecological services
  • Policy support tools and methodologies in relation to assessment of value of biodiversity and benefits of ecological services for mankind

Step 4. Communicate and evaluate IPBES activities, deliverables and findings

  • Catalog of relevant assessments
  • Information and data management plan
  • Catalog of policy support tools and methodologies
  • Promotional strategies, materials and procedures
  • Reviews of the guidelines, procedures and methods
